Eskra school recognised for its commitment to the environment

ST Patrick’s Primary School in Eskra is celebrating after its Eco Committee received the internationally recognised Eco-Schools Green Flag Award for its outstanding work in environmental sustainability.

The Eco Committee, made up of 14 pupils from years four to seven, principal and Eco Committee leader Keira McCallan, parent nominee Leanne McCarroll, Board of Governors representative Caroline McCarroll, and caretaker John Carson, held their Annual General Meeting on Monday.

Mrs McCallan expressed her pride in the school’s achievement.

“The Eco Committee have been focussing on Biodiversity, Waste and Energy over the past two years and have led a number of projects throughout the school,” she said.

“This included the Big Battery Hunt, the Wheelie Big Challenge, Energy Saving Week, the Big Schools Bird Watch, the Edina Trust Bulb Project and the Big Spring Clean.

“As a result of their fundraising efforts and parental donations, the Eco Committee have purchased new signs for the outdoor classroom and some outdoor bins.

“As a registered Forest School, our pupils and staff are passionate about protecting the environment and inspiring others to respect the natural world.”

This year, the school will present the Stephen Colton Memorial Award to their Environmental Enthusiast of the Year at the Annual Prizegiving, in memory of the late Master Stephen Colton, a beloved teacher who led the first eco committee at the school.

Looking ahead, pupils and staff are looking forward to attending the Eco-Schools NI Green Flag Award 2025 Celebration Event.
