Tyrone men commit more motoring offences than women

A RECENT analysis of motoring offences in Tyrone reveals that male drivers account for the vast majority of offences.

The most common offence committed by male drivers throughout the North was driving without insurance, with 4,853 recorded incidents. On the other hand, speeding was the most common offence among female drivers, with 1,324 violations.

The analysis provided by CompareNI.com, which was based on the latest PSNI figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request, also broke down the data by region. Belfast City saw the highest number of motoring offences, with 2,761 committed by men and 541 by women. Armagh City, Banbridge, and Craigavon followed closely with 2,141 offences by men and 477 by women.

In Fermanagh and Omagh, 1,019 offences were recorded, 838 of which were committed by men, and 181 by women. Meanwhile, Mid Ulster saw 1,265 offences, with men responsible for 1,015 and women for 250. In Derry & Strabane, 972 offences were recorded, with 927 committed by men and 219 by women.

Overall, there were 34,758 motoring offences detected across Northern Ireland, which represents a 17 per-cent decrease from the previous year’s 41,767 detections. Insurance offences were the largest category, with 5,875 incidents, followed by speeding with 4,840 offences.

Despite the large number of insurance-related offences, car insurance premiums in Northern Ireland are starting to decrease. As of December 2024, the average premium stood at £659, down from previous levels. This decrease follows a reduction in compensation rates and a decline in serious accidents, particularly among young drivers. Legislation aimed at reducing whiplash claims has also contributed to the drop in premiums.
