STRABANE Athletic will play Premier Intermediate League (PIL) football next season.
On Saturday Raymond Foy’s team clinched their place in the third tier of the Northern Ireland Football Leagye by defeating Crewe United 1-0 in the second leg of the PIL play-off at the Melvin Arena.
A first half penalty by Simon McGlynn proved decisive to ensure that Strabane won the play-off 4-1 on aggregate.
The final whistle was greeted with great scenes of joy and jubilation as the Athletic players and their supporters celebrated their long overdue promotion.
The emotions were in stark contrast to those of twelve months ago when Foy and company had been beaten in the play-off by Mid Ulster League champions Oxford Sunnyside.
But, on this occasion, there were no slip-ups.
Strabane, the Ballymena and Provincial Intermediate League champions, proved themselves worthy winners over the two legs with star man McGlynn scoring three of their four goals.
