GLENTORAN host HB Torshavn in an Europa League Preliminary Round tie at the Oval later this evening (Thursday) and for Irish Cup hero Robbie McDaid it’ll be a first taste of European football.
Naturally the Omagh man is excited about testing himself on the European stage but from a club perspective he’s fully aware of the importance of the one-off game against the Faroe Islands team and the huge financial rewards that come with a decent run in Europe.
McDaid, who scored a dramatic winner in the Irish Cup Final victory over Ballymena United, said he and his team-mates were relishing the Glens’ first game in Europe in five years.
“It’ll be a tough test. I think Linfield beat then 3-2 over two legs a few years back. There are no bad teams in the Europa League,” he said.
“For me personally this is the next level you can test yourself and it would be nice to get on the scoresheet. But the main thing is just getting through the round and the financial reward that comes with it would be massive for the club. Hopefully we can get the result.”
