Castlederg surfer, James Garvey survived one of the world’s most ferocious waves when he rocketed safely out of one of Mullaghmore’s notorious ‘barrels’ yesterday (Sunday).
The Derg man, who is the well-respected owner of Rossnowlagh Surf School, managed to raise over £2,000 through this daring stunt off the coast of Sligo, which he has put toward equipment that will help keep Irish big wave surfers safe.
In an online post, James said, “Cheers everyone that donated to my Mullaghmore Fundraiser, your generosity was astonishing.
“We raised €1110!
“Myself and @irishtowsurfrescue added €500 each to the money raised, also.
“We spent all the money on six emergency boxes – each given to big wave chargers of Ireland.”
The boxes include VHF radios, flares & first aid kits.
“This fundraiser takes steps to keep big wave surfers in Ireland safe, while doing what we love….Like yesterday at Mully!” he concluded.
