NEWMILLS running sensation Nick Griggs has broken the European U20 indoor mile record with a stunning performance at the National Indoor Athletics Live race in Dublin yesterday.
Griggs, who turned 17 last December, finished second in the race behind Olympian Andrew Coscoran but clocked an incredible time of 3:56:40 to break the European U20 indoor record (his finish time just 1.38 seconds outside the world record set by American athlete German Fernandez in 2009).
It’s the first time Griggs has ever run a sub-four-minute mile, and it smashes the previous record set by Lithuania’s Lukas Verzbicas in 2011.
It’s been a remarkable breakthrough season for Griggs, who won a gold medal in the 3000km European U20 Championships last year in the 3000m race, just a month after his brother Josh passed away in an accident near Banbridge.
