Day and night of memories planned for Omagh man ‘Hoss’ McDermott

A SPECIAL event is being organised next month in memory of an Omagh killed in a workplace accident in Australia in 2015.

Friends will once again come together to remember Joe McDermott on Sunday, May 4.

A group of Joe’s closest friends and family will honour his memory with a charity football match and a special evening fundraiser – both in aid of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, the organisation that helped bring Joe home after his sudden passing almost ten years ago.

Joe, affectionately known as ‘Hoss’, was a popular figure in Omagh.

Each year since his death, his friends have organised a football match to celebrate his life and raise money for a cause close to their hearts.

This year’s game will see Hoss FC – made up of Joe’s friends and family – take on TRFC (Tamlaght Road) in a friendly at Omagh Leisure Centre, kicking off at 12 noon.

“The game is always good craic,” said one of the organisers. “It brings everyone together – Joe’s mates, his family, people who knew and loved him. It’s a real celebration of who he was.”

Later that evening, a dinner dance and charity auction will take place at the Silvebirch Hotel, where Joe worked for ten years.

The event is expected to be the final fundraiser in Joe’s name, capping off a decade of support for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.

Joe’s sister Laura McDermott paid tribute to the ongoing support from the local community.

“As a family, we are so grateful to the people of Omagh who have supported us so generously for the last ten years. As we host this final fundraiser, we want to raise as much money as possible for this fantastic charity and encourage as many people as possible to get involved.”
