A PARISH priest has condemned the dumping of an animal carcass at a church in Caledon, describing the act as ‘despicable’.
The incident at St Joseph’s Catholic Church is believed to have taken place between 11pm on Sunday, October 5 and 2pm today (Monday).
In a statement, police said that they received a report this afternoon ‘relating to animal remains in the Minterburn Road area of Caledon’.
Father Cathal Deveney, parish priest of St Joseph’s, said that the incident was ‘disgraceful and disturbing’.
“Animal intestines have been dumped here in the car park of St Joseph’s, Caledon,” he said. “It is a criminal act; perhaps even a hate-filled criminal act. Why would anyone come intentionally to our car park and insult the local community in this despicable way?
“Whoever did it, well, pray for them because they are in a bad place and need serious help. Possibly even, to be caught and brought to justice. I am very saddened and angry.
“May St Joseph watch over our parish today and everyday.”
Sinn Féin assembly member for the area Colm Gildernew has called on anyone who may have information to immediately contact the PSNI.
“I condemn in the strongest possible terms the abhorrent and criminal act on our parish and churchgoers with the dumping of animal carcasses at Caledon Chapel,” he said. “There is absolutely no place in our society for this behaviour.
“I also want to express my support for Father Deveney and all parishioners.
“There is absolutely no place Whoever is behind this sickening act must be brought to justice.”
Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
