Further restrictions ‘inevitable’ in Strabane

HEALTH minister Robin Swann has warned that it is “inevitable” that Strabane will face additional Covid19 restrictions as cases continue to rise. 

Earlier today, a further 424 cases were announced across the North – 139 of which were in the Derry and Strabane council area.

One new Covid-19 related death was reported, bringing the Department of Health’s total to 579.

Speaking at Stormont’s executive press briefing today (Wednesday), Mr Swann said it was “inevitable” that additional restrictions will need to be introduced in the Derry and Strabane  Council area.

An executive meeting is to be held tomorrow (Thursday) and Mr Mr Swann said he did not want to pre-empt anything ahead of the meeting but added it was “inconceivable” for ministers not to take action.

In the past seven days, 487 confirmed cases of the coronavirus have been identified in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area – bringing the total number of case to 1,030.
 
The rate of positives cases in the council area is 323.2 per 100,000 people – more than double the rate in any of the other ten council areas in the North.
 
The increased number of cases continues to be mainly prominent in younger people with 78 positive tests identified among people aged 19 or younger.
 
The 20 to 39-year-old category seen the highest number of cases confirmed with 243 cases, while the 126 people aged between 40 and 59 tested positive.
