MORE used to giving than receiving Sion lady Jean Mullen was honoured recently when a surprise tea party was organised to recognise her achievements.
Jean works tirelessly raising money for charity despite having had life-saving surgery herself.
Back in 2019 Jean was diagnosed with stage four cancer, she had to have her voice-box removed, along with her tongue, gullet and glands.
Throughout the pandemic Jean used her creative skills to make and sell floral displays to raise funds to help various groups who were supporting local people in Strabane.
Among the groups she helped were Marie Curie, Strabane Food Bank, Strabane Area Scrubs, the Alzheimer’s Society, Down Syndrome, Autism, Cavaliers In Need, Community Rescue Service Strabane, The Koram Centre, the cancer ward Altnagelvin and Strabane Community Project.
Independent councillor Raymond Barr helped organise this treat for Jean. He explained, “On three occasions Jean’s husband Derek arrived at my door with donations for various charities. It was decided Jeans selfless generosity and kindness in raising thousands for good causes needed to be recognised, and so it was decided to have a tea party and presentation in her honour, a small tribute but so well deserved.”
