‘Adult only’ sports day being held to support Niamh’s charity

AN ‘adult only’ sports day event in aid of the Niamh Louise Foundation is set to take place this month in Cookstown, with adults from throughout Tyrone and beyond welcome to relive the excitement of their youth.

Organised by Claudia Wylie, a committee member of the Niamh Louise Foundation, and Chloe McGuigan, the event hopes to raise much needed funds for the local suicide prevention charity.

The Niamh Louise Foundation was set up in 2006 following the death of 15-year-old Niamh McKee who died by suicide.

Niamh’s sudden death sent shock waves through the small rural community of Clonmore outside Dungannon, and the surrounding areas.

“When it comes to running a charity it’s important to remember that it doesn’t just happen by magic,” said Claudia.

“It takes a lot of work and there are a lot of strings to be pulled to keep things running smoothly.”

Claudia said that whilst many of the charity’s volunteers and service users have been doing their bit to raise vital funding for the service, she thought the idea of hosting an adult only sports day would be ‘something fun’.

“Those interested in taking part can look forward to some of the classics. We have four-person relay teams, 100 metre sprints, potato and spoon racing, three-legged racing, tug of war, and wheelbarrow racing.

“There is also going to be a raffle on the day, with loads of prizes that have been generously donated from local businesses that we will be announcing on social media ahead of the event.”

The Adult Only Sports Day in Aid of the Niamh Louise Foundation will take place on Saturday, May 31, at the Cookstown High School turning circle pitch from 12pm.

There is a £5 entry fee for racers.

“Spectators are welcome to come along for free but donations are welcome,” said Claudia.
