Awards aplenty as Omagh air cadets celebrate success

OMAGH air cadets saw a night of awards, appointments and even a promotion within the ranks last Thursday.

The local squadron received a visit from NI Wing Commander, Chris Hodges, as he conducted the annual inspection of the cadet building.

However, the positive mark on the premises wasn’t the only good news the squadron received, as, at the end of the night, Wg Cdr Hodges was proud to recognise the achievements conducted by the local cadets.

Firstly, five cadets were certified after completing the St John’s Ambulance essential first aid course, held in Omagh last October.

For the cadets, this is the first stepping stone of first aid in their still blooming cadet career, with opportunity to develop their skills later this year.

However, the big news came to cadet Ethan McHugh, who, for the last few months, has been working hard to be a shining example to the squadron.

Cadet McHugh had been pushing himself above what was expected: His uniform was always immaculate, he applied for any course he could do, including achieving his leadership badge, and he studied hard for his cadet exams.

All of this was well-rewarded when Wg Cdr Hodges announced to the squadron that Cadet McHugh would be promoted to corporal.

Cadet Corporal McHugh marched up to receive his new stripes – hardly containing the gleaming smile that erupted with this news – and Wg Cdr Hodges congratulated him with his shiny new chevrons.

Flying officer, Kathy McHugh, said, “We are delighted that these young people have received their essential first aid qualification.

“This is the first step of the first aid qualifications that we provide, with more advanced first aid training down the pipeline.

“We further congratulate our new Cadet Corporal, Ethan McHugh. The promotion process consists of a presentation, marching assessment and a formal interview. Cadet Corporal McHugh will further develop leadership and mentorship skills.

“This is a fantastic ways to gain confidence and set yourself apart from others when applying for jobs or university,” the Flying Officer continued.

Although it wasn’t just cadets who received awards that night, as the Omagh squadron welcomed it’s newest member of staff: Brian Dinsmore from Castlederg, who was formally-appointed to the role of civilian instructor.

At his appointment, Brian said, “I am excited to be formally appointed in this new role within the air cadets, and I plan to get stuck in with upcoming activities offered by the organisation.”
