The relationship you have with your job can be just as important as some of the other relationships in your life. It must be balanced, symbiotic and non destructive. However, we all find ourselves getting to that inevitable point when the sparkle starts to wear off, and we find our everyday life feeling a bit more like a task.
When you get to this point, where you seem to be slumping at your desk, sighing excessively and dreaming about 5.30pm, it becomes clear that something has to change.
Some of the time it’s your job, or your working conditions. But a lot of the time, it’s your attitude.
Be Realistic
Even the most exciting jobs have boring days, so if you’re going to work expecting to be entertained every single day, you may need a reality check.
There will always be certain tasks or areas of your job that you enjoy more than others. There will always be days that are extremely interesting, and days that are extremely boring. Accepting that there will be bad days, will make the good days all the more enjoyable.
Realise You’re Probably In A Rut
Ruts are relatively common in the work place. Things have gotten a little monotonous and you have to realise that it can’t be a bed of roses all the time.
The most important thing to do is admit to yourself that you’re in a bit of a rut. Just because it’s started to feel a little tedious doesn’t mean you can use it as an excuse to give up.
Find The Good
Look for the good points every day in your job and focus on those.
Find a way to bring the positive elements of your favourite tasks, into every aspect of your job. We naturally focus on the negative aspects of our jobs, so make a special effort to be as positive as you can.
Take Action
Don’t wallow in self-pity or assume that there is nothing that you can do. There is always something you can do.
Even making a plan to get yourself out of your rut will make you feel as though you’re well on your way to job satisfaction.
Redefine Your Role
Don’t assume you have to get a new job or change company if you want a different role.
If you think there is a job that suits your skills, interests and talents better, then have a chat with your boss and see if there’s anything else you can do. Make it known that there are certain skills that you really want to utilise, that way, should any opportunities come up, you’ll be first in line.
Stick With The Positive
Unfortunately there is always plenty of negativity and complaining in almost every work environment.
Do your best to stay away from this sort of communication. You’ll find the more time you spend around complaints and negativity, then the more you will want to complain and be negative.
