A CHARITY collection at Holy Cross College in aid of Ukrainian refugees has resulted in the highest single amount ever raised at the school.
Following a decision last week to gather some money, the school community managed to raise an astonishing £6,500 in just two days.
Speaking this week, Holy Cross principal, Clare Bradley also remarked that amount raised reflects the deep sympathy the school has for the plight of the refugees.
“Last week in Holy Cross we took a quick decision to have a collection of money to support the Cooltura Charity in Poland as Ms Monika Zajac, one of our classroom assistants and parents, is affiliated to this charity,” Mrs Bradley explained.
“Mr Brian McGilloway and the sixth formers carried out the collection from staff and pupils on two consecutive mornings. Many of our parents also sent in donations as did members of our Board of Governors.
“We were absolutely overwhelmed by the response and managed to raise an astounding £6,500 in two days, the highest single amount ever raised by the college. On Friday we sent the cheque directly to Cooltura’s base in Belfast.”
She continued, “Our entire school community has great sympathy for the current plight of the people in Ukraine and this is reflected in the very generous amount received. We felt it was the very least we could do, and if our donation helps even a few people, it will have been worthwhile.
“In addition Monika and a team of sixth formers helped sort and pack various essential items which had been donated by the public and left at the Melmount Centre. The response to this appeal by the public was also wonderful,” she added.
