NEWS that a new social housing development in Strabane has been given the green light has been widely welcomed.
The development consisting of 70 dwellings – made up of 60 houses and ten apartments – will be situated on the old Our Lady Of Mercy School site on the Evish Road. In addition to the homes there are plans to develop part of the site for long-term sustainable use and have private amenity space, landscaping, and public open areas.
Proposals
The proposals for the site were brought by McGettigan’s Homes in association with Clanmill Housing Association and were passed at a recent meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s planning committee.
Cllr Kieran McGuire, Sinn Féin who presided over the meeting, said, “I am pleased to see this application progress through the planning system.
“There is an urgent need for quality new housing for families in the Strabane and the surrounding area to meet growing demand,” he explained.
I am delighted to see developers continuing to invest in the area and recognising that Strabane is a fantastic place to locate.”
Proud
SDLP councillor Jason Barr, who brought forward the proposal said, “I was proud to propose the Planning Committee accept this application. Apart from providing much needed social housing in Strabane, it will also help tackle the long-standing problems around anti-social behaviour on and around the site.”
