Dromore town and countryside set for a ‘Big Spring Clean’

A ‘BIG Spring Clean’ will get underway in Dromore as environment-loving members of the community come together for their annual litter-picking weekend.

The efforts headed by community organisation, ‘Dromore Health and Wellbeing’, are part of a Northern Ireland wide, ‘Live Here, Love Here’ campaign targeting litter in local towns and countryside.

Speaking to the Ulster Herald ahead of this weekends litter pick, Dromore Health and Wellbeing member, Mary McCoy said, “At Dromore Health and Wellbeing we are all about taking pride in the place we live, keeping it clean and protecting it.

Commenting on a recent spate of dumping behind St Patrick’s Hall in Dromore, Mary voiced the frustrations of the entire group when she said, “It was disgusting and disappointing to see the rubbish dumped, especially considering it is only metres away from the local recycling centre.

“It’s frustrating when we clean up areas only for these areas to be littered with rubbish again within a week.

“But you have to look positively and we hope that this weekend’s ‘Big Spring Clean’ will build awareness.”

Sinn Féin councillor and Dromore resident, Colette McNulty said, “The littering behind St Patrick’s Hall at the river actually made me cry. It is not good enough.”

“I will be bringing this issue to the attention of the waste management in the council,” stated Colette.

“We in the Dromore community are so grateful to those that give their valuable time and commitment to keeping our town and countryside tidy. These people work tirelessly to keep Dromore litter free.”

Mary added, “We would encourage as many people as possible to come out and join us on Saturday or Sunday. We have lots of people telling us that we are doing a great job – but everyone needs to play their part.”

The litter pick will take place on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 March. Registration and collection of litter picking equipment is available at The Village Table on Friday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
