IT was an emotional day for the staff, parents and pupils of Drumduff Primary School in Sixmilecross, as they shut their doors for the last time after 87 years of educating the community.
The closure comes following a decline in enrolment, and going forward, pupils will attend other schools throughout the area from September.
Speaking with the Tyrone Herald, principal Mary Darcy, who has worked in the school for 20 years, commented, “Transitioning to a bigger school may
be a big change for some of the children because they’re used to a more rural
setting.
“Smaller classes have their advantages in terms of being able to offer one- to-one teaching, as well as learning in smaller groups.
“For 87 years, the school has been the heart of the community, and we would like to wish the children, and their families all the best for September as they move to their new schools.
“The children have had many happy days, and have made so many great memories in Drumduff Primary School, and it truly is the end of an era.”
The school’s legacy was celebrated by staff, pupils and parents on Thursday, an event which included a barbecue, while the kids roamed the playground for one last day of fun and games in their beloved school.
The bitter-sweet festivities came to an emotional ending as Mrs Darcy rang the school bell for one last time, surrounded by parents and pupils who applauded and cheered.
