Guide dogs to descend on the Gortin Glens

A canine carnival will open in the Gortin Glens this Sunday when a Tyrone guide dog group hosts a day of fun and fundraising.

A deluge of dogs – and their owners – are expected to flood the majestic forest park this weekend, as the Guide Dogs Northern Ireland attempt to recruit new volunteers, supporters and fundraisers.

Mark Quinn, an Omagh man who has been involved with the charity for over three years, said that he has personally witnessed how guide dogs change the lives of local people.

“It costs £54,800 to support each of our dogs from birth to retirement and we are completely reliant on the generosity of the public to keep continuing this life-changing work,” began Mark.

“I’ve had the privilege of watching dogs go from playful puppies to perfect pooches, including Glen, who I’ve been looking after while he attends ‘Guide Dog school’.

“I’ve also met some incredible local people – and right across Northern Ireland – who are living with sight loss, and heard from them how our services have given them back their independence.”

However, Mark further explained that the charity’s Omagh branch is in need of new volunteers and fundraisers.

“On Sunday, anyone that comes along will be able to speak with people from the charity and discover what you can do to help out. Oh, as well as that, there will be a raffle!”

Parents are encouraged to bring their children, as Penny (the Guide Dog’s mascot) will be in attendance, and the day will be peppered with spot prizes for the dogs that turn out in the best fancy dress.

“Entertainment will also be provided post-walk by Sleight Delay,” said Mark.

All walkers are asked to be outside Brie’s Barista Bar for 2pm to register. Any and all donations will be gladly welcomed and they will go directly to the charity.
