Omagh High rock their socks to mark World Down Syndrome Day

STAFF and pupils of Omagh High School celebrated World Down Syndrome Day by coming to school in their silliest, most bright and striking socks.

Every year on March 21, World Down Syndrome Day is observed to create awareness about Down syndrome.

The date was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

Explaining a bit about the fundraising day, which was held on March 15, principal, Mr Gaitatzis said, “We began the morning with an assembly which celebrated Down’s Syndrome and how inclusive Omagh High School is.

The assembly included talks from Mrs Crawford and Year 11 pupil Beth who have siblings with Down’s Syndrome, past pupils Emma and Megan also joined us, as did Beth’s brother Scott.

“One of our current pupils, Katie, who has Down’s Syndrome, also spoke.

“The assembly was followed by a tea party organised by Katie for the visitors and Year 10 girls.”

Expressing delight at the success of the day, Mr Gaitatzis concluded, “Everyone had a fantastic morning celebrating Down’s Syndrome and raising money for Katie’s chosen charity, Omagh Spires Special Olympics Club.

“Thank you to all pupils and staff who wore their ‘silly socks’ and donated to this worthwhile cause.”
