GARDRUM Park in Dromore was brimming with talent and determination as young female footballers from across Tyrone gathered for the third annual ‘Tournament for Triona’.
On Saturday, 16 teams came together to honour Triona McNabb, a beloved club member who passed away in 2017 at the age of 34.
The tournament, first organised in 2022 by Triona’s friends, aims to keep her memory alive and celebrate her unwavering commitment to Dromore Ladies GFC.
Triona was known for her significant contributions to the club, both on and off the pitch, as a player, manager, and committee member.
Speaking to the UH, Dromore Ladies GFC chairperson, Geraldine Teague, described the day as a ‘fitting tribute to Triona’.
“Triona was a cherished member of Dromore Ladies GFC,” Geraldine said.
“Her dedication and passion for the club left a lasting impact on all who knew her. Triona’s memory continues to inspire us all and remains deeply rooted within Dromore St Dympna’s club and the entire community.”
Teams from both Dromore Ladies GFC and Tummery Athletic wore a rose crest with Triona’s name alongside the words, ‘croí mór maith agus gorm go smior’, which translates to ‘a heart of gold and a true blue’.
In a special message at the event, Triona’s family addressed the participants, stating, “Every year we like to give you players a ‘Triona style’ message, because she was passionate about mentoring young girls and older players, too.
“Too often in life, in sport, in careers, the voices of girls and women are not heard, and, to achieve what we want to achieve, we have to shout a little louder, be a little braver and that means standing together but standing out too so your voice is not lost.
“Never allow anyone to dull your sparkle: You need to shine brighter than bright – like the brightest star in the sky.”
