A young singer from Newtownstewart is evoking the sounds of Los Angeles’ famed Laurel Canyon in the early ‘70s in her new single ‘Tuesday’s News’.
Naomi Campbell, who is now based in Liverpool, but plays regular gigs in West Tyrone, is a prolific singer-songwriter, and has released a new single ‘Tuesday’s News’.
She told the Ulster Herald that the song was inspired by true events after watching the news during a trip home to Newtownstewart.
“I was watching the news at home in Ireland a couple of years and there was a tragic story about Liverpool,” she said. “The story was so impactful I wrote the entire song that day.
“I recorded ‘Tuesday’s News’ in Liverpool, and had my friend and bandmate, Robert Johnson, record the guitar. A fantastic local musician also played the Fender Rhodes piano on the track, too.
“I wanted the track to sound like it was recorded in the early ‘70s in Laurel Canyon,” Naomi added. “I am very inspired by David Crosby and James Taylor, and all the music that was made at that time.”
Naomi will release her next single, ‘Dont You Mind’, this summer. It was recorded at legendary Sun Studios in Memphis, which is where Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison recorded their earliest hits.
Naomi is also in the band ‘Motel Sundown’, with fellow Tyrone singer, Karen Turley, and Liverpudlian guitarist, Robert Johnson.
The band has also released a new single named ‘Waterfall’.
The band has made regular performances in Omagh and last performed in McCann’s Bar last December.
Waterfall was recorded in a studio in Liverpool, and it is sung by Karen Turley with Robert on guitar along with Naomi.
Waterfall has been described as a ‘stunning dreamscape of sound’, and it is a departure from the band’s rockier style.
Naomi will perform some local shows in July opening for Irish country blues sensation, Muireann Bradley, for three shows at the Earagail Arts Festival in Culdaff, Letterkenny and Gaoth Dobhair.
You can listen to both Waterfall and ‘Tuesday’s News’ on Spotify and Apple Music. For more information on Naomi’s music, you can visit her Instagram account @naomicampbellmusic.
