TRIBUTES have been paid to an Omagh musician who was a regular face at venues across the town.
Aidan McGale, a member of the country and bluegrass band, the Knotty Pine, died on Tuesday December 21.
The owners of Sallys, where the band had a residency every Thursday, paid tribute to Aidan, saying, “The McGirr family, staff and customers of both Sallys and Top of the Town would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Patricia, Sarah, Lauren, Brian, Kieran and the extended McGale family on the sad passing of our dear friend Aidan McGale.
“Countless stories and anecdotes were told during The Knotty Pine String Band’s 12 year residency in Sallys front bar and we will look back on those nights with Aidan, Declan, Tony and Seamus fondly.
“We will remember Aidan for his sharp wit, love and dedication to live music and ultimately being our friend and a true gentlemen.”
Frank Galligan, TV and radio presenter, and long-time compere of the Ulster American Folk Park’s Bluegrass Festival, said, “He was a great musician, a warm and engaging man.
“Anytime I interviewed or introduced the lads over the years, Aidan’s ‘devilment’ came to the fore. As the first band to play the first ever [Omagh] Bluegrass Festival, the Knotties are held in particular affection up here, and Aidan was much loved. God Rest him.”
McCanns Bar, where the Knotty Pine also performed, extended their condolences to the family, adding, “We’ll miss the tunes and his wit”.
Responding to the sad news on Facebook, Sacred Heart College said, “The Board of Governors Principal staff and pupils of Sacred Heart College are saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Aidan McGale, esteemed colleague of those who taught or worked in St Brigid’s High School.
“We extend our sympathies to his wife Patricia and daughters Sarah and Lauren, Grandchildren and wider family circle. RIP.”
The Cool Hands String Band paid tribute, saying, “We had the absolute pleasure of listening this legend many times over the years. A real gentleman that we will never forget! With his humour and quick wit, he lit up any room he walked into.”
A funeral mass will be held tomorrow (Friday) at 10am, which can be viewed on Drumragh Parish Webcam in the Sacred Heart Church followed by cremation in Cavan.
Please note, the house is strictly private and Covid restrictions apply.
