Budding Omagh chefs get to show off their culinary skills

YOUNG college students in Omagh have recently been given a chance to display their culinary skills through a new competition.

The president of Omagh Rotary Club, Peter Waterson, praised the efforts of all the participants and their respective tutors.

He presented certificates of achievement to participants from the catering department team at South West College, Omagh.

The Rotary Generation Young Chef competition was run in conjunction with the six regional colleges of Further and Higher Education offering catering as vocational training in their different campuses.

The competition consisted of two stages, beginning with local heats hosted by each participating culinary college with the local winning team progressing to the regional final hosted by Belfast Metropolitan College.

South West College entered three teams from its respective campuses in Omagh, Enniskillen and Dungannon.

The Omagh team was victorious, winning the local heat and then going on to compete in the regional final, where 15 other teams province-wide were narrowed down to six regional finalists.

Although the Omagh team did not bring back any silverware from the regional final, Mr Waterson said they were highly commended as aspiring young chefs with great skills and talents in presenting and serving food of an exceptionally high standard.
