THE Rock and District Historical Society welcomes historian Clive Scoular on Thursday, March 14 at 8pm, for a presentation on Charles Stewart Parnell.
One of the most powerful men in Ireland in the middle of the 19th century, Parnell fought for the rights of tenant farmers through his leadership of the Land League.
He spoke often in the House of Commons on behalf of the Irish people and was a very successful leader of his party for most of his life.
He sought independence for Ireland and, although his attempts at Home Rule for Ireland were not successful during his lifetime, his name is remembered for the work he did.
Speaker, Clive Scoular, has given hundreds of talks to historical groups and clubs throughout the North and led dozens of tours with students and others to the Easter Rising sites in Dublin. He has also written 18 books on Ireland’s history including the only biographies of two of its Prime Ministers. His other titles have highlighted the lives of many Irishwomen and men whose worthy contributions to Ireland have been forgotten.
The presentation takes place at the Old School in the Rock.
Many thanks to the Mid Ulster District Council for grant funding to support the 2023-2024 programme season.
