New research has revealed that UK wedding guests are forking out an average of £350 a year attending nuptials – more than £87 million collectively.
Gifts, transportation, outfits and accommodation all add up, and one in five guests are actually spending even more than £500, with 7% admitting they spend over £1,000 going to weddings throughout the year.
While the average wedding gift currently costs £61, 11% spend over £100. Most guests – 42% – opt for giving cash to the bride and groom, and a fifth help towards the honeymoon costs.
34% of UK wedding guests also prefer to stay on the safe side and stick to a pre-approved gift list, whereas 6% revealed they would give something unexpected such as a handmade present.
The Office of National Statistics recently confirmed that over 250,000 weddings take place each year. Bumping up the expense even further, almost half of 2,799 UK poll participants said they attended two weddings a year.
