THE Glenelly area has been included in the schedule of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Waste Management Patrols as part of effort to ensure it remains an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Visitors to the scenic area are being encouraged to play their part by ensuring they do not throw any litter on the roads and fields.
The Glenelly Valley is the longest in the Sperrins and is an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA). This is a type of designation used for an agricultural area which needs special protection because of its landscape, wildlife or historical value.
Welcoming the move, local councillor, Fergal Leonard, said it was a ‘fantastic’ initiative.
Cllr Leonard said, “It is fantastic to see more visitors in the area, especially visiting the Now Anois Giant at the former site of the Sperrin Heritage Centre.
“As well as local residents, I would ask that visitors respect the local area including keeping it free from litter.
“I am therefore grateful that Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC) have now added the area to their Waste
Management Patrol schedule.”
