WAT’s The Story? Sean Harpur, a true friend of the Gortin Glen

Sean Harpur sits on an old stone seat on the roadside of the Gortin Forest Park. The seat, restored by the Friends of the Glens group, known locally as 'Rest and be Thankful'. A curious granite stone seat, built here for the tired and footsore pedestrians are invited to rest. The seat is the gift of an old man who one day wearily trudging up the hill, sat down in the hedge to rest. Shortly afterwards a legacy was left to him, and one of the first things he did with his money, was to erect this stone seat in 1880 for other weary travellers to rest. Many a person was glad for a rest here, and the horses and donkeys always appreciated a cool drink from the refreshing spring water, which fitters down through the hills into a stone though on the other side of the road.
