Winter is here and with it, a whole host of skincare issues brought on by the changing season.
If it’s not the cold outside blasting your face it’s the heating inside drying skin out! Add to this a tad less vitamin D and our shift in routine and diet then people, we have issues.
Luckily, with a few minor tweaks to your existing skincare routine can do much to ward off unwanted dryness and dullness and keep your complexion glowing and healthy all season long.
Here are our top tips to keep your glow this Winter…
1.Drink more water
You knew it was coming my friend. We all know we need that H2O to keep our skin hydrated. Yet when the temperature drops it’s easy to forget!
Unfortunately for us, Winter is not forgiving and to offset the drying effects we need to keep up our intake.
If water really isn’t appealing, try adding fruit for flavour or swap in tea. There’s no end of herbal options out there!
Ginger and lemon or camomile are especially great to warm up and maintain hydration at the same time.
2. Opt for a cream based cleanser
When Winter arrives it’s time to put away the alcohol based cleansers. Alcohol is a common ingredient as it helps to strip away oils but add the drying effects of winter and these products are best avoided.
Instead opt for cream-based cleansers that will help keep the moisture in while still effectively removing the day’s dirt and make-up.
3. Exfoliate gently
Regular exfoliation is beneficial at any time of year. But in Winter you might feel the need to up the practice from once to twice a week.. Not only will it take off the dry, dead skin cells, but it also helps you renew new healthy skin by stimulating blood flow.
Just remember that your facial skin is more delicate than most other areas of your body so it’s important not to scrub too hard.
Exfoliates that are used on the face should be very fine grained with small beads. If a product feels rough or scratching on your fingertips then it will only end up drying and damaging your face.
Save those rougher products to treat your arms and legs to a refreshing scrub instead. We love this simple, homemade sugar scrub for just that!
4. Skip the scalding hot shower
If you love a scorching hot shower, then I’m sorry to say you’re not going to love this tip.
But if you have ever you feel that tightening sensation on your skin after a hot shower, then my friend you’ll know what I’m talking about!
Excessively hot showers zap the moisture and oils out of your skin and hair. So turn the heat down a few degrees to help stop the frizzing and drying effects. Then see the next step!
5. Moisturise immediately after showering
And I mean immediately.
Getting that moisturizer on as soon as possible locks in that moisture as your skin dries and your body cools.
When your skin is still fairly damp is best and don’t forget to include your hands and your feet! Your skin will thank you!
6. Wrap up to protect from the elements
Winter is undoubtedly harsher on your skin than summer. So remember to wrap up and protect your skin from drying and redness that the cold brings on.
A scarf and gloves are essential to protect your hands and the delicate skin on your neck!
