A5 decision rests with new Infrastructure Minister

THE fate of the long-awaited A5 dual-carriageway now rests in the hands of the north’s Department for Infrastructure Minister, John O’Dowd, pictured below, who holds the power to give the project the green light.

The County Down politician, who briefly assumed the role prior to Stormont’s suspension, has voiced support for the completion of the dual-carriageway between Aughnacloy and Newbuildings.

Last year, the Planning Appeals Commission submitted its report on the Public Inquiry into the road, which is now under close scrutiny by department officials.

Newly-appointed First Minister, Michelle O’Neill, also emphasised the significance of the A5 in enhancing connectivity and supporting communities, during her acceptance speech following the restoration of the Stormont Executive on Saturday.

West Tyrone Sinn Fein MP, Orfhlaith Begley, echoed the sentiment, stressing the urgent need for the A5 upgrade in terms of road safety and economic potential.

“This is currently one of the most dangerous roads on this island and has been the scene of heartbreak for too many families,” she said.

“The upgrade is needed first and foremost for road safety. It will also attract further investment and unlock and the economic potential for this region.

“There is also an onus on the Irish Government to uplift their financial contribution to the A5 in line with their original commitment to co-fund the project.”

It is now 16 years since the A5 was first approved for completion.

Ms Begley added that she looked forward to working with the Executive to ensure the completion of the A5 without any further delays.
