A5 upgrade will ‘undoubtedly save lives’, says O’Neill

UPGRADING the A5 is a “top priority” that will “undoubtedly save lives”, the deputy first minister has said.

Michelle O’Neill reaffirmed Sinn Féin’s support for the project following the recent announcement by the finance minister that £113 million would be made available for the first phase of works.

In a tweet posted on Tuesday, Ms O’Neill said, “The A5 road upgrade is a top priority for Sinn Féin in the Executive.

“Finance Minister @conormurphysf recently confirmed funding that would get workers on site and begin the first phase of the upgrade.

“Upgrading the A5 will save lives, create jobs and attract investment.”

The pledge comes following last month’s tragic road collision which claimed the lives of Nathan Corrigan, Peter Finnegan and Petey McNamee on the road in Garvaghy.

Also in December, Aaron Harkin lost his life following a collision on the A5 near Strabane.

In a video posted alongside her tweet, the deputy first minister added, “We have sadly seen too many people lose their lives; young people on this dangerous stretch of road. Every one of those deaths is one too many.

“Investing in the A5 will enhance road safety but it will also undoubtedly save lives.”

It is also hoped that an improved A5 can attract investment and jobs to the region.
