VANDALISM of life-saving equipment along the Castle Walk in Castlederg has been condemned after life buoys were thrown into the river.
The Community Rescue Service (CRS) were called out last week to recover and replace the equipment, which is crucial in emergency situations along the popular riverside path.
Describing the act as ‘senseless’, Derg Sinn Féin councillor Caroline Devine warned the consequences could be fatal.
“I’m deeply concerned and saddened that the life saving equipment along the riverside walk in Castlederg last week. This senseless action by those responsible for this destruction is totally unacceptable and shows a complete disregard for the safety of their local community.
“Their actions are extremely dangerous and could literarily be the difference between life and death.”
Cllr Devine appealed for those responsible to stop, adding that she has requested more safety equipment be installed along the route.
The Community Rescue Service also urged people using the park to be vigilant and to report missing or damaged safety gear.
“We have volunteers based in Castlederg who are committed to maintaining this vital equipment,” a spokesperson said. “We’ll also be engaging with relevant agencies to request further installations, but that only works if vandals leave the equipment alone.”
