CASTLEDERG contractor, McKelvey Construction, has been appointed to build a multi-million pound project that has been hailed as one of Derry and Strabane council’s most innovative developments.
The £6.2 million Acorn Farm capital build project is set to transform the former MoD site at Columb’s Park in Derry into a unique urban growing space.
Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Cllr Patricia Logue, welcomed the news saying she looked forward to seeing the plans progress now to the next stage.
She said, “This is very positive news and I am delighted that we are now ready to begin work on this phase of the project.
“The Acorn Farm will have a major impact on the wider St Columb’s Park and the Waterside area, offering local people the chance to get more involved in protecting and enjoying their local environment.
“It will help to educate, inspire and encourage everyone to think more about sustainable food sources, what we can all do to promote conservation, and how we can lead more healthy and active lives.”
Work has already begun on site at the park, with building works underway at the Gate Lodge facility located at the entrance to the main avenue leading to St Columb’s Park House.
It is expected that work will begin on the next phase of the Acorn Farm project in the coming weeks, and is due to be completed in early Summer 2025.
McKelvey Construction have built and redeveloped a number of buildings for Derry City and Strabane Council including Strabane Youth Centre, Pennyburn Youth Club and also helped redevelop Ballymacool Leisure Park in Letterkenny for Donegal County Council.
