RESIDENTS in a County Derry village have complained that they have been hearing a puzzling humming – similar to the mystery sound being experienced in Omagh.
The noise in Claudy, described as a ‘low, distant, droning sound’, has prompted a lively, week-long discussion on social media.
Councillor for the area, Declan Norris, said he had reported the noise to Derry City and Strabane Council, and is hoping that there can be a similar investigation to the one started in Omagh.
Cllr Norris said, “I have received a few reports about the hum, and they are mainly from people living rurally just outside Claudy.
“I have contacted the Derry City and Strabane environmental health team, and hope they can investigate what is happening. I have one theory of what could be making the sound. I know that electricity cables were installed on electrical pylons in the area, and it is well-known that they can emit a sort of humming sound when there is high humidity or cold weather.”
Meanwhile, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council say they are not in a position to provide an update on their own investigation.
A spokesperson said, “Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is continuing to work with the specialist noise company in the ongoing investigation in relation to the ‘humming’ noise in Omagh.
“It is a live investigation which could result in enforcement action.
“The investigation is very technical in nature, and it is not possible to give an indication as to when it will be completed, or release any information on investigative methods and findings as this may prejudice the investigation.”
