A POLICE investigation is continuing this week following an incident where a man was erroneously checking electricity meters in the Castlederg area.
The PSNI had received a report that a male purporting to be an NIE employee was circulating in the area of Ratyn Road, on December 9 in a grey vehicle.
Subsequent checks with Northern Ireland Electricity confirmed this male was not a real employee and when challenged for ID, the man reportedly he left the property at speed.
“The people of wider Castlederg have big hearts and are very trusting,” said Derg councillor for the SDLP, Steven Edwards. “It’s absolutely reprehensible that there are conmen and thieves out there trying to take advantage.
“Many of the victims of these sorts of alleged scams are older and vulnerable people. I think it’s therefore important that we all check in on family members and neighbours, especially those who may be living alone.
“I would encourage everyone to be extra cautious and to always ask for ID for anyone calling to their homes. I’d also strongly encourage reporting any suspicious behaviour to the PSNI.”
If you are in any doubt about a caller ask the person for identification then ring QUICK CHECK on 0800 0132290 – genuine callers will not mind.
