Council to host reception for champs Tyrone

A CIVIC reception is to be hosted by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council to mark the achievement of the Tyrone team adding 2021 to their list of All-Ireland winning years.

The council’s facilities, including the Strule Arts Centre in Omagh, are also to be illuminated in red to mark the achievement. It follows a proposal by Sinn Fein Omagh town councillor, Barry McElduff.

During a meeting of the Council’s Regeneration and Community committee on Tuesday night, he described the win as a momentous one for the county. He said it had given everyone a massive morale boost.

Independent councillor, Josephine Deehan, said she had been ‘totally amazed’ by the skill displayed by the players on the pitch and thanked the Tyrone County Board for the 10 tickets that they had provided to the council.

SDLP councillor, Mary Garrity, whose Trillick club had four members on the Tyrone panel, said to have her children at the match made it all the more memorable. She remarked on remembering the 1986 All-Ireland when she left Croke Park so disappointed after Tyrone lost their first Sam Maguire decider.

Independent councillor, Emmett McAleer, said that the victory had given people a ‘new lease of life,’ adding that Tyrone had now won more All-Ireland Finals than they had lost.
