Delight as first wedding takes place at Baronscourt Est

A TYRONE couple made history when they became the first couple to get married at Baronscourt Castle in almost a century.

Newtownstewart woman Natalie Baxter married Drumquin man Lee McClelland back in July at the historic Baronscourt Castle.

The couple were supposed to get married in Newtownstewart Presbyterian Church followed by a reception in the Silverbirch Hotel with 200 guests but the Covid-19 restrictions put paid to their plans.

With only 15 people allowed to attend the wedding the couple came up with the idea of getting married at Baronscourt, and the Duke of Abercorn was happy to hold the ceremony and reception at his estate.

Natalie explained, “We initially thought that we were going to get married in the garden and then we had a very kind offer from His Grace the Duke of Abercorn to hold the ceremony and reception at Baronscourt, if restrictions permitted.

“Getting married in Baronscourt Castle was an honour and it made our day extra special to be greeted in person by the Duke of Abercorn on arrival.

“The Duke was so kind and I am delighted to have photographs for my album taken with the Duke and my Granny.”

The Duke said he was delighted to host the wedding. “Last autumn Natalie contacted the office to enquire whether her wedding photographs could take place around the anchor here at Baronscourt,” he said.

“When I heard of this approach and as her parents and grandmother are greatly valued friends, I suggested that Natalie might like for the photographs to be taken in the front of the house and gardens.

“When the lockdown was initiated I offered Natalie and her family the facilities of either the portico or the front hall for her wedding ceremony whilst complying with all the restrictions imposed.

“Under the prevailing conditions it was a very happy event and the Tyrone sunshine was also present.”
