Dual language signs vandalism condemned

A SINN Féin councillor has condemned the vandalism of Irish language signs in Dungannon and Killyman.

The attacks are part on an ongoing campaign perpetrated on similar signs over the last number of years.

The two signs are located at Coolhill Cemetery, Dungannon and Drumkee Road, Killyman.

It has emerged that both signs, that are council property, had previously been damaged.

Cllr Dominic Molloy, pictured right, has called on the PSNI to “do more to bring this criminal damage to an end and bring perpetrators before the courts as a matter of urgency”.

He stated, “Damage to the property of Mid Ulster Council is a cost to every rate-payer across the district. I further call on all councillors to add their voice to call for an end to this intolerance of anything Irish by some. Use of the Irish language is now commonplace across society and is now finally protected in law, as a council we will continue to promote use and visibility of the language.”

Meanwhile, Independent councillor Dan Kerr has welcomed the introduction of dual language signage around the Donaghmore area.

Thanking local residents who requested the signs and replied ‘positively’ to surveys, Cllr Kerr said there is also ‘good news’ for residents living in Galbally and Killeeshil as there will also be dual language signage installed in the near future on Esker Hill, Clonavaddy Road and Aghaginduff Road.

He called on Mid Ulster residents who are interested in applying for dual language signage to get in touch with him or the council or their local councillor.
