Inquest into teen’s death may not take place until 2025

AN inquest into the tragic death of Matthew McCallan while on a night out in Fintona almost two years ago, is facing significant delays, with the likelihood that it will not take place until 2025.

The Dungannon teenager had been attending a jamboree in Fintona in December, 2022 when he went missing, prompting a widespread search involving hundreds of volunteers. Tragically, the 15-year-old’s remains were later discovered, causing heartbreak for his family, friends, and the wider community.

During a preliminary hearing for the inquest on Thursday, a solicitor informed the court that there was ‘no prospect’ of the matter being addressed this year, with 2025 being the likely timeframe for the inquest.

However, a potential opening in September 2024 could be considered depending on the progress of other matters.

The Coroner emphasised the importance of expediting the process, particularly for Mr McCallan’s parents.

It was suggested that the inquest would likely take place in Omagh or another suitable location for the family and witnesses involved. Additionally, it was revealed that the disclosure of crucial documents related to the inquest was still in the early stages.

A further preliminary hearing is anticipated before the summer to provide updates on disclosure, the list of witnesses, and other relevant issues.
