Pope Francis has died

The Vatican has confirmed the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88. The announcement was made early this morning by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who delivered the official statement on behalf of the Holy See.

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” said Cardinal Farrell.

“At 7.35 this morning (local time), the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church,” he continued.

Farrell praised the late pontiff for his commitment to the values of the Gospel, saying, “He taught us to live the values ​​of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised.”

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, served as head of the Catholic Church since March 2013. His papacy was marked by a strong focus on humility, social justice, and outreach to the marginalised.
