A 22-year-old man was sentenced today for the offence of behaviour likely to stir up hatred, after a video was posted online in June 2023, showing people singing an offensive song relating to Michaela McAreavey.
Dillion Kelly, Edmund Court in Tobermore, had denied the charge but was sentenced to 240 hours of community service at Laganside Magistrates Court, after being found guilty on Wednesday, March 13.
Ms McAreavey, the daughter of former Tyrone football manager Mickey Harte, was attacked and killed by an intruder at her hotel room while on honeymoon in Mauritius in 2011.
In May 2022, a number of people were recorded taking part in a song about her murder.
The video clip was livestreamed from a hall in Dundonald, east Belfast during events to celebrate the centenary of the foundation of Northern Ireland, provoked public outrage.
Last month, two other men, who had already pleaded guilty, were sentenced for the same offence.
Steven Kane (26) was sentenced to four months in prison, which was suspended for 18 months, and 23-year-old Cian Jones was sentenced to 240 hours of community service.
