Minister views flood risk measures at Tyrone rivers base

THE Infrastructure Minister has visited Tyrone to gain a first hand understanding of her department’s ongoing work on flood risk management.

Speaking during her visit to the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Rivers Headquarters at Loughry, just outside Cookstown, Liz Kimmins said climate change was increasing the risk of flooding across the North, with warmer temperatures and heavier rainfall placing pressure on communities.

“While September is designated as ‘Preparedness Month,’ my department undertakes important flood risk management work every day,” she explained.

“It was fascinating to see this often-unseen work in action and how it directly helps manage flood risk.”

The Minister was shown the range of measures DfI Rivers employs to monitor and mitigate flooding.

A network of more than 130 hydrometric stations provides near real-time data on river levels, helping staff respond effectively during severe weather events.

The data is publicly available, allowing residents and emergency responders to stay informed about local flood risks.

Prevention was another key focus of the visit. Staff demonstrated Flood Maps NI, a digital tool highlighting areas across the North prone to flooding and the potential impacts.

The maps assist the department and developers in guiding new projects and targeting flood prevention schemes to high-risk areas.

For homeowners, the tool is invaluable in assessing whether their property may be vulnerable to flooding.

Ms Kimmins also highlighted the Homeowner Flood Protection Grant Scheme (HFPGS), which provides funding for protective measures for homes at risk.

“I have recently increased the funding threshold and enhanced eligibility criteria to offer more comfort and reassurance to vulnerable homeowners,” she said.
