INFRASTRUCTURE Minister Liz Kimmins has confirmed that a review of additional road safety measures is underway on the A5 to identify where further improvements can be made.
Her comments came in response to a motion passed by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council calling for urgent action on the route, which has claimed 57 lives since plans for its long-awaited dualling were first approved in 2007.
Ms Kimmins said it was a matter of ‘deep regret’ that lives continue to be lost on the A5.
“The Department continually monitors safety across the road network, including the existing A5, to ensure the current road safety measures are appropriate,” she said.
“A review of additional potential safety improvements on the existing A5 is currently being carried out to identify any practical interventions that could improve safety for road users.”
Plans for a new £1.7 billion dual carriageway were first announced 18 years ago but have faced repeated legal challenges and delays. An appeal against a High Court ruling that quashed planning approval for the project is expected to be heard in December.
Meanwhile, Justice Minister Naomi Long has confirmed that one of four mobile Speed Indicator Devices on the A5 will be moved from Crawford’s Bridge to near Canavan’s at Garvaghey.
She described the A5 as a ‘vital arterial route’ for local communities and businesses but said it had been the scene of far too many serious incidents and fatalities.
“The impact on families and communities has been devastating, and ensuring the safety of those who travel on this road is a matter of utmost importance,” she said.
