On the go to Knockavoe…

A CLIMB of Knockavoe in aid of five different charities is due to take place towards end of the month.

The event, organised by local fundraiser Paul Mullin, will see a group of people put on their hiking boots to raise money for worthy causes.

This will be the second time Paul has organised the climb and this time, the charities which will benefit are Marie Curie cancer, the Alzheimer’s Society, the Foyle Hospice, Ovarian Cancer Care and Care For The Elderly.

Paul is known for his money-raising activities, responsible for the annual Strictly Come Dancing event which takes place in St Pat’s Hall. However due to Covid restrictions, Paul has been unable to run the event since 2019.

“We were hoping to have Strictly back up and running this year and we did think it might happen, but the restrictions got lifted too late, leaving us too little time to organise,” he explained. “The Knockavoe climb was something we did last year with 25 people taking part and it was quite the success, so it made sense to do it again. This year, interest has grown significantly, with 90 people having signed up to do the climb. I’m aiming to reach the 100 mark before we climb on October 23, so there’s a couple of weeks left yet.

“Lots of the climbers have been virtually recruited through contacting my Facebook page and if anyone else would like to come along then by all means contact me.”

Going forward, Paul is hoping to keep the annual climb going as well as bringing Strictly back to the dance floor.

The group will set off from St Pat’s Hall on October 23 at 11am and hope to be back by lunchtime.
