Plans submitted for community hub in Castlederg

PLANS have been submitted to Derry City and Strabane District Council for a new community hub at a vacant home in Castlederg.

The application was made by agent David Young Architectural Consultant on behalf of Killeter Road Community Association, who have arranged to lease a Housing Executive property in Millbrook Gardens.

A supporting statement said the Association was formed in early 2021 to “provide a positive focus for the local residents to counteract anti-social behaviour and tackle social deprivation”.

The proposed hub will serve residents of Millbrook Gardens, Alexander Park, Derg View, and the wider Killeter Road area, offering a range of activities and services.

It will provide a base for the association’s activities, including training courses, drop-in sessions, advice services, coffee mornings, and a youth club. Operated by unpaid volunteers from the local area, the hub will cater to various age groups, with each activity expected to draw between 15 and 20 participants.

Funding for the project primarily comes from external sources such as the National Lottery, supplemented by proceeds from fundraising events. The association aims to enhance the well-being of local residents through educational initiatives and leisure activities, fostering a sense of community cohesion and social interaction.

The statement said, “It is envisaged that each activity would attract between 15 and 20 people, and each activity would attract different age groups at different times and all activities would not take place at the same times.”

The application will be presented to council members at a future Planning Committee meeting.
