Poignant war song from Omagh Academy students

THE talented music students of Omagh Academy have recorded the classic World War Two song – ‘Someday We’ll Meet Again’ – to honour the 75th anniversary of VE Day on Friday.

The song may have been penned in 1939 at the outbreak of the war, but head of music at Omagh Academy, Rachel Bingham, also explained that it holds a very special place in the heart of the school’s close-knit senior students.

“We have a small class, and the A-Level music students here always become very close very quickly,” she said. “But they haven’t seen each other in weeks – and they do not know when they will be able to meet up as a collective again. The words ‘someday we’ll meet again’, for them, also have great meaning for those who are finishing their careers at Omagh Academy.”

The video will feature snippets of ten Omagh Academy senior music students singing to camera, while the emotional backing melody will be played on piano by Omagh Academy music teacher, Charles Fyffe.

Additionally the video will feature one student from Omagh CBS and one student from Loreto Grammar, who also study music at Omagh Academy.

Rachel, who is meticulously editing the video and vocals together, said the finished piece will be something for the students to treasure.

“It really is lovely,” Rachel said. “It is many hours of work for a few minutes of music, but we hope it will bring a smile to the faces of all who hear it.

“We’re proud of our students and we hope they keep in touch.”
