Politicians pay tribute to outgoing SDLP leader

POLITICAL figures in Tyrone have expressed their best wishes to SDLP leader Colum Eastwood following his announcement that he will step down from his role.

Eastwood, who has led the party for nine years, stated that it was time to “give someone else a chance” to re-energise the SDLP.

At a press conference on Thursday, Mr Eastwood confirmed his decision, describing his tenure as a “great privilege.”

Afterwards, West Tyrone SDLP MLA Daniel McCrossan took to social media to thank Mr Eastwood for his “outstanding contribution” to the party, noting that he had dedicated much of his life to the SDLP and to the people of Ireland.

“Colum has dedicated his youth and adult life to the SDLP and people of Ireland.

“He will remain an important part of the leadership team.”

Mr McCrossan also announced that he has called a meeting of the SDLP Management Committee to initiate the process of electing a new leader.

First Minister Michelle O’Neill also extended her well wishes to Mr Eastwood and his family.

She said, “We have worked together as leaders for many years now, to restore the political institutions in the north and in protecting the Good Friday Agreement and the all-island economy against efforts to impose the hardest possible Tory Brexit.

“I look forward to working with Colum’s successor as leader of the SDLP in a constructive manner for the good of all our people.

“Sinn Féin will continue to work with all parties in the Assembly and Executive to deliver for workers, families and public services.”
