A BROTHER and sister from Carrickmore have jointly written and illustrated a new book aimed at helping children understand autism.
Entitled ‘Joining In,’ the book by Colleen and Sean Conway has already sold out.
The book tells the story of Zac the Zebra who experiences autism and struggles to make friends in the jungle until Gerry the Giraffe shows him, and the reader, the power of acceptance and joining in with others.
Colleen is a special needs teacher based in London and Sean is an experienced artist.
Colleen said they have both been “really delighted” with the positive reaction that the book has received.
“The key message within the book is to help children in mainstream education to hopefully learn about what autism is and how we can respond to it,” said Colleen.
“It is based on an intensive interaction between children imitating behaviours perceived as odd or quirky and creating a positive relationship and understanding to move forward.
“There is no judgement in the book, but rather showing how trust can be built up between children with special needs and those in what could be described as mainstream education.
“When I shared the story with my brother, he then interpreted what had been written through the brilliant illustrations.”
Funding for the book was received through Omagh Enterprise Centre and Colleen says that their support and the response has been really encouraging.
“Our book is something that we will now have for life.
“The fact that it sold out is amazing and we’re now planning a second print,” she added.
“Teachers, parents and the local community have been really supportive and interested in the book.
“I think it’s good for everyone to develop their knowledge of autism.”
• Copies of the book have been provided to members the Saturday Club in Omagh and can also be obtained by contacting Colleen.
