‘Steady decline’ in local Covid19 cases

A LEADING medical professor has confirmed that there has been a ‘steady decline’ in the number of cases in Derry City and Strabane council area.

Prof Ian Young, Northern Ireland’s chief scientific adviser has said there is “strong evidence” to suggest that the tough restrictions imposed in the Strabane council area are working.

Three weeks ago, strict regulations were put in place to try and curb the spread of Covid-19 in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area after cases increased dramatically.

Mr Young said there was a ‘much more noticeable picture’ in the north west, while there was also beginning to be a slowing of the spread of the virus across the North.

Speaking about the local area, Mr Young said, “There has been a steady decline in cases from the peak reached – the timeline is aligned well with the enhanced local restrictions in Derry and Strabane, with closed hospitality.

“There is strong evidence that those measures have had a significant impact on the Derry and Strabane region.”

He said the start of a slowing in positive cases across the North most likely reflects the household restrictions which have put in place by the executive.

Mr Young added they would continue to monitor the situation ahead of the weekly press conference at Stormont tomorrow (Wednesday).
