A DRUMQUIN man who lived entirely ‘off the grid’ – without running water or electricity – has been fondly remembered as a unique local character whose sharp mind, love of music and generosity left a lasting mark on all who knew him.
Tommy ‘TK’ Kearney, who died suddenly on Saturday, was described at his Requiem Mass in St Patrick’s Church as a man whose unconventional lifestyle only deepened the affection in which he was held.
Born and raised in Drumquin, TK later settled about a mile outside the village, choosing a simple, self-sufficient way of life. The stream beside his home provided water for cooking, washing and day-to-day living, adding to the ‘charm’ of his rugged setting.
Fr Thomas Canning said TK’s family and friends had shared countless stories of his humour, kindness and sharp intellect.

“He had a great passion for farming and the outdoors,” Fr Canning said. “When he was younger, he spent much of his day in his wellies, embracing the countryside and his work. He was a very social person, and the number of joyful stories people have about him is a testament to the happiness he brought to others.
“Tommy’s life was full of humorous and joyful moments.”
A lover of rock music and an avid reader, TK was equally known for his hospitality.
His annual BBQ and rock night was a highlight for many, drawing friends from near and far. He also cherished his trips to South Africa and kept a wide, loyal circle of friends.
Fr Canning offered condolences to TK’s partner Sinéad, his siblings Alison and Gerard, and the wider family.
Following the funeral, TK was cremated at Lakelands Crematorium in Co Cavan.
He will be sadly missed by his entire family, and his many friends across Tyrone and beyond.
