Volunteers tackle Blackwater debris

VOLUNTEERS met at Bonds Bridge in Dungannon on Saturday afternoon to mark the beginning of a major clean-up operation in an attempt to clear a severe blockage of debris from the River Blackwater.

The full width of the river has been completely blocked by the debris and is subject to major concern regarding access for fishermen and other essential services such as Lough Neagh Rescue.

As it stands, no official government agencies have taken any responsibility in addressing the issue. Chair of Mid Ulster District Council Dominic Molloy was in attendance to lend a hand and offer support to those who volunteered.

He emphasised the fact that someone needs to take responsibility for the ongoing issue.

“We need government agencies on board to help these hard-working volunteers who have come along today and gave their time and effort in an attempt to clear this blockage,” he said.

“With Lough Neagh Rescue unable to access this side of the river, something needs to be done, should anyone in distress need them.”

Local fisherman Gerard McCourt, who coordinated the clean-up, thanked everyone who took part.

He said, “People who don’t even use the river got involved after seeing photographs of the state of it.

“Many shook their heads at the fact that the River Agency, who have been contacted multiple times regarding the issue, seem to have turned their back on it.

“It has been completely and utterly neglected, so we were out until it got dark on Saturday trying our best to clear up what we could.”

Mr McCourt further stated that he would eagerly welcome the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Andrew Muir to witness the state of the river in hopes that something could be done to resolve the issue.
